Car Battery Replacement: Step-by-Step Guide

Before you begin performing a car battery replacement, park your car, activate the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Now, let’s go over how to install a car battery in your Colonie driveway:

  1. Loosen the nut that secures the back cable (negative cable) to the battery with a wrench.
  2. Next, twist and pull the cable off. Don’t use a screwdriver or another tool if the nut is stuck; try to loosen it up with the wrench. You can also try using some penetrating oil.
  3. Remove the red battery cable from the positive terminal using the same steps above.
  4. Loosen and remove the battery hold-down clamp.
  5. Carefully remove the battery using both of your hands. Make sure you’re wearing thick rubber gloves to protect your skin from battery acid.
  6. If you notice any built-up corrosion in the battery tray or on the hold-down clamp, you can use a baking soda and water mixture to clean it.
  7. Clean off the battery cable connectors with the same cleaning solution and a wire brush.
  8. Insert the new battery into the battery tray and tighten the hold-down clamp to secure it.
  9. Spray the new battery’s positive and negative terminals with an anti-corrosion solution. This can help lengthen the battery life.
  10. Attach the cables to the battery terminals, starting with the red cable, then the black cable.
  11. To ensure all the connections are secure, try moving the battery. If it doesn’t move at all, you’re all set.
  12. Start the engine. If it starts with no issues, the battery cables are properly connected.

CAUTION: Battery acid is highly corrosive and can cause chemical burns, so be extremely careful when handling the battery.
