How to Change a Tire

Mechanic with Tires

Unexpected challenges can arise on the Colonie road. A flat tire can happen anytime, and knowing how to change a tire can be the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major ordeal. But beyond the emergencies, it’s also crucial to know how often to change car tires to ensure the safety and longevity of your vehicle. Whether you’re a seasoned Albany driver or just starting out, our guide below will be beneficial to you!

A Simple Guide on How to Change a Tire

  1. Before you begin the process, make sure your car is on a flat, stable surface. Turn on your hazard lights, especially if you’re on the side of the road.
  2. You’ll need a jack, a lug wrench, and a spare tire. These tools are typically located in the trunk of most vehicles.
  3. Before lifting the car, slightly loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire with the lug wrench, but don’t fully remove them yet.
  4. Place the jack under the car (refer to the owner’s manual for the correct spot) and lift the car off the ground.
  5. Now, you can fully remove the lug nuts and take off the flat tire.
  6. Place the spare tire on the hub, making sure it aligns correctly. Hand-tighten the lug nuts as much as you can.
  7. Slowly lower the car back to the ground using the jack and then tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern with the lug wrench.
  8. Ensure the spare tire has the correct air pressure before driving. Visit a nearby service station if it’s low.
  9. Place all your tools and the flat tire back in your trunk.

Knowing How Often To Change Car Tires

  • Regularly check the depth of your tire tread. If it’s below 2/32 of an inch, it’s time to replace the tire.
  • Even if they look in good shape, tires that are more than 6 years old should be inspected by a professional. Aging can compromise the structural integrity of the tire.
  • Any visible cracks, cuts, or bulges are signs that it’s time for a replacement.
